Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that impacts millions of individuals globally. There are seizures associated with it that can disrupt daily routines significantly. Despite the availability of treatments, some individuals may not find them effective or may encounter undesirable side effects. As a result, some people are turning to therapies like medical cannabis.

Medical cannabis consists of components known as cannabinoids – the most famous ones are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the compound linked to the mind-altering effects often associated with using cannabis. CBD does not have this impact, but it has drawn attention for its possible healing properties.

Research indicates that CBD could show potential in decreasing the frequency of seizures in individuals with epilepsy disorders such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox Gastaut syndrome. Additionally, the FDA has officially sanctioned a CBD drug called Epidiolex for managing seizures in these specific scenarios.

The specific ways in which CBD decreases seizures are currently under investigation and study continues in that direction. Through the interaction with the encocannabanoid system, it is mentioned as a probable factor where CBD might exert its effects. This system comprises receptors spread across the body and brain that are responsible for controlling functions such as mood, pain and movement. This could possibly affect these receptors to adjust brain function and potentially lower the frequency of seizures occurring.

Medical marijuana is typically not the choice for treating epilepsy and is best explored with the advice of a healthcare expert for individuals who have not responded well to conventional drugs.

Despite its benefits, ongoing research into the use of medical marijuana for treating epilepsy is currently underway. Further investigation is required to gain an understanding of its lasting impact and identify the optimal formulations and methods of delivery.
